i was just wondering if it would be a good idea or could it make things worse?

It would not make things worse, but don’t do any spine manipulation. It might even help.

send him to a professional massage therapist. You can hurt him if you don’t know what you are doing and make it worse.

No it is not a bad, just do it gently and not too firm. A good type of massage for that case is effleurage; it is by the use of your palm and some fingers, do it in a circular motion from top to bottom of the back. Massage is intended to make you comfortable and relax and it is good for the circulation.

Sending him to a professional massage therapist would actually help to speed his recovery. Massage therapists know techniques that help muscle strains heal faster and better, compared to having no massage at all. I would not recommend massaging him yourself, as you are not properly trained to do so.
